the Island
Cabilao is a 7.2 square-kilometer island that belongs to Loon, Bohol.
The main reason most visitors come to Cabilao is diving on some of the wonderful reefs that surround the island. There are three Beach resorts on the island that mainly cater to divers, who seek out the undisturbed reefs and the serene atmosphere. La Estrella Beach Resort has its own dive shop,The Cabilao Dive Center, where it rents-out equipment, and can provide pressured air refills for scuba-divers, and even snorkeling off the beach is very rewarding.
On the island, hunting of birds is strictly prohibited, and, as a result, you can see more birds here compared to other places in Bohol. Also, the island is the home to Bohol's only natural lake, Lake Lanao, near Barangay Pantudlan, which also serves as a bird-sanctuary. From the resort,it's a 30-minute walk to this lake following a small path through a nipa-covered swamp.
Cabilao island consists of five barangays (villages) namely Talisay, Cambaquiz, Looc, Pantudlan, and Cabacungan. Just wandering around the island is an attraction in itself. It is a good way to get an impression of what life must have been like in the Philippines a century ago, without the hustle and bustle of modern life. You can come across people herding a few goats or cows, small houses with children playing around, the occassional rooster, and so much more.
